HEART OF ENGLAND CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY SUPPORTS LAW TO REDUCE LANDFILL AND ENCOURAGE RECYCLING
The Heart of England Co-operative Society has underlined its commitment to the environment by not only meeting but going beyond strict new rules surrounding the disposal of electrical equipment.
Despite the fact that the Society collects and cleanly disposes of most old electrical goods when they deliver new ones, they have also put money into a government scheme to enhance the recycling facilities of councils throughout the UK.
The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE Directive) sets collection,
recycling
and recovery targets for all types of
electrical goods.
The directive imposes the responsibility for the disposal of unwanted electrical and electronic equipment on the manufacturers and retailers of such equipment
Under the WEEE Directive retailers have to either put money into the recycling scheme or set up their own method of collecting and disposing of unwanted goods.
Bryan Wheatley, General Manager of the Non-Food and Travel Division at the Heart of England Co-operative Society said: “We are pleased to support the WEEE Directive. The Society has a commitment to the environment, especially at a local level, which we have demonstrated with a number of initiatives, such as increasing the number of ‘A’ rated energy efficient appliances on sale in our stores.
“Even though we are paying into the scheme we will take most things away anyway. It’s just one more way we can invest in the region we serve.” |
