DOZENS MORE CHARITIES BENEFIT FROM HELPING HEARTS
Charities and worthy causes across Coventry, Warwickshire and South Leicestershire are continuing to benefit from the Heart of England Co-operative Society’s Helping Hearts Award scheme in which all profits from tobacco products are redistributed to local good causes.
In the last three months alone, the Society has donated literally thousands of pounds to help different groups of people, from Brownies to the homeless, and from college students to victims of crime.
Helping Hearts was set up in 2000. The latest round of donations takes the total distributed across the region to £486,000.
Among those who have benefited in the Rugby area are the 4th Bilton Brownies, who received £250 for camping equipment, Avon Valley School, which was awarded £200 towards a student counselling group, to help pupils stop smoking and the Homeless At Risk Project’s emergency fund, which received £200 towards providing temporary shelter for vulnerable young people.
Priors School was awarded £200 towards lap-top computers, Rest Incorporated with Depression Alliance was awarded £250 towards IT equipment, the Bareboards Trust received £200 towards running costs of furniture delivery vehicles and Warwickshire College received £500 towards a field trip in Tanzania.
Also in Rugby Bilton Infant School pupils will have a new tyre park in their playground, thanks to a £200 donation from Helping Hearts, and Cruse Bereavement Care was awarded £100 towards its running costs.

Pupils at Wolston St Margaret’s School, between Coventry and Rugby, will benefit from the £250 donation which will be spent on cycle stands, allowing them to store their bikes safely when they cycle to school.
In Coventry the 42nd Coventry Scouts were delighted with their £100 donation. The cash will be used towards training new adult leaders. Meanwhile the Chris Wick Memorial Fund received £150 towards its Christmas 2007 Appeal. The cash was used specifically to supply victims of crime and their families with Christmas hampers.
And St Osburg’s School was given £100 towards a new outdoor classroom.
In Hinckley and Nuneaton the 3rd Burbage Brownies and the 5th Burbage Guides were each presented with £200. The Brownies will use their donation towards the cost of room hire whereas the Guides will use theirs for running costs for a new guide unit.
Staff, pupils and parents at Oakwood Primary School, which caters for children with special needs, were delighted with their £320 donation. The cash will be used towards sensory items for the pupils.
Age Concern Hinckley and Bosworth received £200. The charity will use the cash to fund its quarterly newsletter and to further extend its distribution.
Weddington Primary School received £100 to develop an out-of-hours free gardening club and Riding for the Disabled was awarded £500 to replace and repair worn saddles and bridles.
The blind and partially sighted in Atherstone were delighted to receive £100. The cash will be used this year to take members on outings.
Atherstone Pension Convention now has a further £50 in its fund, allowing more members to take part in a planned trip towards their convention in Blackpool in June.
Barlestone Old School Hall has used its £400 towards a new cooker and the Barwell and District Royal British Legion will use its £100 gift vouchers to buy electrical items for ex service widows and men in need.
Jo Dyke, Community and Membership Adviser at the Heart of England Co-operative Society, said: “Once again we are delighted to help some of the most deserving causes in Coventry, Warwickshire and South Leicestershire.
“As a community retailer, the Heart of England Co-operative Society feels it is only right to continue backing the work of these organisations.”
