HEART OF ENGLAND CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY DONATES £1,000 TO HELP SICK AND INJURED ANIMALS

A Nuneaton-based sanctuary for sick and injured animals are celebrating after landing a £1,000 windfall.

The cash, from the Heart of England Co-operative Society, was awarded to the Warwickshire Wildlife Sanctuary which provides a haven for various creatures such as parrots, owls, foxes, dogs and badgers.

The sanctuary works to recuperate and re-home the animals and its policy to never put residents to sleep - unless they are suffering - means it is heavily reliant on funds and donations for their everyday upkeep. The cash is spent on food, bedding and vets bills.

Warwickshire Wildlife Sanctuary was one of six charities and causes chosen by Society members in a recent survey to receive a share of £10,000.

The survey was conducted through the 2008 Members' Calendar amongst the 65,000 registered members of the Heart of England Co-operative Society throughout Coventry, Warwickshire and south Leicestershire, who were then invited to vote for six charities to receive a slice of the cash.

The remaining £9,000 was distributed between Coventry Myton Hospice, which received £5,000, Crossroads, Parkinsons Disease Society, LOROS and Multiple Sclerosis Society, which each received £1,000.

The Society pledged the cash from its Helping Hearts Awards scheme, which uses the profits of tobacco sales to distribute among charities, worthy causes and community projects.

The Calendar also contained vouchers worth hundreds of pounds of savings in the Society's Food, Non-Food and Travel stores, including 10 per cent off one food shopping visit above £5 each month, alongside attractive local scenes.

Membership of the Society is open to anyone aged 16 or above living in the Society's trading area, with application forms available from all of the Society's Food and Non-Food stores across the region.
