HEART OF ENGLAND CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY SURVEY GIVES INSIGHT TO LOCAL, GLOBAL AND SUSTAINABLE PRIORITY ISSUES

The level of care and living conditions for elderly people in Coventry, Warwickshire and south Leicestershire is top of the agenda of local issues that need tackling urgently, according to a survey.

Climate change and schemes which support energy efficiency and renewable energy was highlighted the most important sustainable issue while clean, affordable drinking water and sanitation for people in the world’s poorest countries was deemed the area of priority on a worldwide scale.

The findings come from a survey commissioned by the Heart of England Co-operative Society, the region’s largest independent retailer.

As part of the survey the Society surveyed 2,114 customers, staff and members primarily across the trading area of Coventry, Warwickshire and south Leicestershire.

Of those questioned 50 per cent listed the care and living conditions for the elderly as the area they felt needed addressing as a priority. Forty-four per cent said climate change and the promotion of energy efficiency and renewable energy schemes was the most important sustainable issue while 40 per cent said making clean, affordable drinking water and sanitation available in the world’s poorest countries was top priority on a global scale.

Ali Kurji, Chief Executive of the Heart of England Co-operative Society, said: “As a community retailer we have a responsibility to help improve the quality of life for residents in our trading area. As a Co-operative Society our responsibilities go far beyond our geographical boundaries.

“This analysis, which involved input from more than 2,000 of our staff, members and customers, is a vital way in giving ourselves and society in general an indication of some of the local and global issues that most people feel need addressing as priority.

“We have listened to what our survey respondents have had to say and will take those views on board and introduce leadership on a local scale in tackling the issues raised.

“The results of the survey have presented us with some real challenges but we will start taking action with the priority areas now and will endeavour to do what we can to help educate our staff, members and customers on how they can also play a part in tackling these issues.”
